Young Blue-dragons; Package of Promising Actors
Fall is fading and winter
already at the gate in South Korea. It means the year is coming to another end
(as always time flies on its own will). On the other hand, it’s award season
for everykind of Hallyu showbiz: music, TV-drama, film, etc. Say hello for red
carpet moments!
Blue Dragon Awards is
one of the top three Korean film industry
ceremonies, along with Grand Bell (Daejong) Awards (held earlier this month)
and Baeksang Awards (in the spring). This year, the event took place at Kyung
Hee University Grand Peace Palace on November 22, 2013. Actually, I only steal a peek on the recap of winners
and red carpet events a week ago (via dramabeans.com). Here is the thing that
stole my attention from the 34th Blue
Dragon Awards. I found it, among all of the winners, nominees, and guests walked
in elegant and glamour. There are some youngsters taking away noonas breath,
hahaha. It’s the package of New Actor Nominees, fresh meat on the table!
As expected, Yeo Jin-goo (16) stood out for his strong
performance in dark-movie Hwa-yi: The
Boy Who Swallowed a Monster and took home the award (such countable result).
I remember his heart-breaking performance in Sad Movie (2005). He has played as
everyone’s young-counterpart cast as long his life (trust me: it’s a very long
list). Currently, he plays as 24 years old informatics-engineer in sitcom Potato Star 2013QR3. That’s a big leap
for his actual age (he’s still a teenager, but yunno, he kinda grew too fast
that now he’s labelled as noona-killer, hahaha).

Im Seul-ong (26) was nominated for his role
in thriller-movie 26 Years. I
doubted him when he started acting, since he debuted as an idol: member of
vocal-group 2AM (I tend to think
that NOT everyone in idol-land has acting-talent, my bad, hahaha). Seulong
improved so much by taking various roles in several projects. Recently, he also
stars SNS-drama Infinite Power which
broadcasted via Samsung’s Youtube Channel.

Next, there was Lee Hyun-woo (20) nominated for
spy-movie Secretly Greatly (other
title: Covertly Grandly). Not so far
from Yeo Jin-goo path, Hyun-woo also started as child actor. He has been taking
many supporting roles for TV-dramas and did them quiet wonderfully. I hope I
can see Hyunwoo as leading cast in his next projects, of course for roles that
also proper for his age. I haven’t heard about his next project, meanwhile we
can see him as MC at weekly music show SBS’s
Inkigayo.

Go Kyung-pyo (23) was also nominated for
horror-movie Scary Story 2. This
movie starred by many familiar young names: Sung Joon, Lee Soo-hyuk, Baek
Jin-hee, Kim Seul-gi, and Kim Ji-won. I’m glad that he got more spotlight
recently. I hope he’ll get real roles for qualified project, tough I don’t
demand for leading cast right away since his popularity is still budding. Along
with our New Actor winner, Kyung-pyo also stars sitcom Potato Star 2013QR3, and his movie Youth Talk is just released, where he plays as a youngman who decides
to sleep with his girlfriend the day before joins the army (ha!).

Lastly, Seo
Young-joo (15) was nominated for Moebius.
He’s a real newish for me, since he’s the youngest and his name is not
familiar. Full of curiosity, I searched the movie-review (via hancinema.net)
and my jaws dropped as I read it. I’m surprised and impressed that he dared
himself taking this project, since the movie-theme is absurd and deviant from
my point of view. It’s not that the movie portrayed sexual-matter but it’s deeper
and weirder than most of other same-theme-movies. Youngjoo currently stars in
weekend drama Gold Rainbow. Yup! He’s another young counterpart actor in dramaland.

It’s always fun to
see young actors building their resume and skills. Let’s wait for the next year
awards and wish that they who reviewed today maintain their good performance
with other wonderful works. It’s rainy here in my place and I guess it’s also colder
at your place or maybe you’re waiting for first snow. Holiday-season is
approaching. It’s time to follow the line in front of theatres, which movie you
want to watch this holiday?
